- What the food science community defines as food science
- What the non-food science community thinks food science is
- Who can be a food scientist
- What I think food science is
- How I became a brown-eye-bushy-tailed food scientists
Let's see.....
Food Science, according to the Institute of Food Technologist, is the study "the discipline in which the engineering, biological and physical sciences are used to study the nature of foods, the causes of deterioration, the principles underlying food processing, and the improvement of foods for the consuming public." (IFT is like a big club for food nerds!)But it doesn't stop there! Food Science also includes safety, sanitation, chemistry, food law and sensory science!
Basically food technologist learning and apply a little bit of a whole lot of sciences (like biology, chemistry, engineering, physics etc) but specifically focusing on food! So we learn things like.... how the thickness of pudding changes when it flows through pipes or what is happening to all of your ingredients in a cookie when its baked at pretty high temperatures! We learn what kind of bugs (microbiological bugs that is) will help you make a beer instead of a wine or a gouda instead of a cheddar! Essentially, if it has to do with food, a food scientist has probably learned something about it.
Let's tackle another one.....Who can be a food scientist?
Anyone! So long as you love food, science, learning and have a teaspoon of determination you can be a food scientist! To officially be a food scientist though, you do have to go to college but besides that its...Easy!
Well that's exciting, we knocked off two things on our checklist! I hope that answered something or anything about what a food scientist is. Yay!!! So until next time...
Stay tuned! Stay hungry!
